Snip is a screenshot and screen recording tool for Omarchy and Hyprland, modelled on CleanShot X. It captures areas, windows and long pages, has an editor for annotations, records the screen, and keeps a history you can search by the text in each capture.
Runs on Omarchy, or Arch Linux with Hyprland. The script builds and installs a pacman package; run it again to update.
How it works
Capture. Annotate. Copy. Done.
Capture an area or a window, annotate it however you want, and copy it to the clipboard.
Features
01 · Studio
Automatic zoom
With Studio on, Snip records the pointer separately from the screen. When the recording stops, the video editor opens with a zoom at each click and each stretch of typing, and the view follows the pointer. Each zoom's level can be changed.
02 · Recording
Screen recording
Records an area of the screen as a video or a GIF, with a microphone if you pick one. The microphone's level is shown before you start, so you can check it's the right one.
snip record
03 · Scrolling capture
Scrolling capture
Select an area, press Start, and scroll the page yourself or let Auto-Scroll do it. Snip stitches the frames into one tall image.
snip scroll
04 · Text recognition
Capture text
Select a region and its text is copied to the clipboard. Recognition runs locally with Tesseract.

05 · History
Search history
Every capture is kept, with the text recognised in it, so you can find a capture by the words it contains. Enter restores the selected one to a card.

06 · Capture
Area capture
The screen freezes when you press the shortcut, so the capture is what was on screen at that moment. The magnifier shows the pixel under the pointer and its hex colour. Alt keeps the selection square, Ctrl grows it from the centre, Space moves it. Selections are exact at any display scale, including rotated monitors.

07 · Capture
Window capture
Press Space during a capture and click a window. It's captured with Hyprland's rounded corners and a shadow, on your wallpaper. Hold Shift for a transparent background.

08 · Editor
Text and arrows
Text comes in seven styles and arrows in four. Drag the middle of an arrow to bend it.
09 · Editor
Redaction
Pixelate, Blur and Black out hide what's under them in the saved image, not only on screen. Spotlight dims everything outside the area you choose.
10 · Editor
Backgrounds
Puts the capture on a gradient or your wallpaper, with padding, rounded corners and a shadow.
More features
Quick Access
Each capture appears as a card in the corner. Copy, save, annotate or pin it from there, or drag it into another app.
Pins
Keeps a capture above other windows. Scroll over it to change its opacity, Ctrl+scroll to resize it.
Pointer in recordings
Studio redraws the pointer. Its size, smoothing and click ripple are set in the editor.
Counters
Numbered markers. Each click places the next number.
Highlighter and pen
The highlighter snaps to lines of text. There are also a pen, rectangles and ellipses.
Aspect ratio
Sets the background to 1:1, 16:9, 4:5 and other ratios.
QR codes
Text capture also reads QR codes and offers to open the link.
Hide desktop clutter
Covers the bar with your wallpaper. Click again to bring it back.
Omarchy and Hyprland
Snip is written in Rust with a Qt Quick interface. It runs on Hyprland only.
Theme
Colours come from the current Omarchy theme and corner radius from Hyprland. Switching themes updates Snip without a restart.
Bar and launcher
Snip adds an icon to Omarchy's bar. Searching “Snip” in the launcher opens Settings and lists each capture action.
Command line
snip area · snip text · snip edit FILE
Every action has a command, so it can be bound to any key or used in scripts.
Config file
~/.config/snip/config.toml
The Settings window writes this file and keeps your comments. Edits made by hand apply immediately.
Local storage
Captures, their recognised text and the history are stored in a local SQLite database. Nothing is uploaded.
Shortcuts
CleanShot's default shortcuts, bound through Hyprland. Print Screen can be added, and any action can be rebound in Settings.

Inspired by CleanShot X
Snip follows the workflow of CleanShot X, a screenshot app for macOS: an overlay that appears instantly, a card for each capture, and an editor for annotations. Snip is an independent project and isn't affiliated with CleanShot X or its makers.
